This program has been endorsed by Royal College of Nursing, Australia, according to approved criteria. 12.75 continuing nursing education (CNE) points have been allocated to the activity, which may be used by nurses as part of their enrolment in the Royal College of Nursing, Australia Life Long Learning Program (3LP).

This educational activity has also been approved as part of the RACS CPD programme.  Fellows who attend can claim 1 point per hour (max 16 points) in Category 4 Maintenance of Clinical Knowledge and Skills.

We are again pleased to bring you an informative and topical program. In response to feedback from last year’s delegates, this year we are expanding the program to include interactive workshops at the Alfred Hospital Trauma Unit, as well as opportunities to present your own cases in open forum sessions. We are pleased to announce the participation of the following speakers:

Dr Paul Banwell, BSc (Hons) MB BS FRCS
Plastic Surgeon, Oxford, UK    

Paul Banwell works in the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive surgery in Oxford, UK. He graduated from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London in 1992 having also studied for a History of Medicine degree at the Wellcome Institute. Awarded his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1996, he was subsequently appointed as the inaugural Duke of Kent Research Fellow with the Stoke Mandeville Burns & Reconstructive Surgery Research Trust. Since this time he has maintained an active clinical and research interest in Reconstructive Surgery and Wound healing and has published and lectured worldwide on these subjects. This has culminated in setting up the Odstock Burns, Wound Healing & Reconstructive Surgery Charitable Trust which now has a wide and active research program. Previously  he has served on the Editorial Committee of the British Journal of Plastic Surgery (SRTC Representative) and is a reviewer for the Cochrane Wounds Group. He is now an editorial executive with the International Wound Journal.

Dr. Anand Deva, Bsc(Med), MBBS (Hons), MS, FRACS
Plastic Surgeon, Sydney, Australia
Anand Dev
a is a senior lecturer in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the University of New South Wales and Attending Medical Officer at the Liverpool Hospital in Sydney. He graduated from the University of Sydney in 1991 receiving the University Medal for Medicine and Surgery. Following completion of his Plastic Surgery training in 2000 he spent a year as research and visiting fellow at the Institute of Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery in New York City. He has won numerous awards for research into wound infection, device contamination, sterilisation and the application of novel wound healing technologies and has been awarded travelling fellowships to present his results both locally and internationally.

Cheryl Frank
Clinical Nurse Consultant - Wound Management, Gold Coast Health District, Queensland, Australia
Cheryl Frank is the Clinical Nurse Consultant throughout the Gold Coast Health District. The role collaborates with Tertiary Medical Officers, General Practitioners, Universities, Nursing Homes and Private Nursing Agencies to manage the care of patients with wounds within both the Public Hospital and community setting. Cheryl also has a private practice managing patients with complex wounds in the community.

Professor Thomas Kossmann, MD, FRACS,
Director, Department of Trauma Surgery, Director, National Trauma Research Institute, The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, Australia
Professor Thomas Kossmann was appointed as Professor/Director of the Department of Trauma Surgery at the Alfred Hospital and Monash University in September 2001. His previous appointment was Associate Professor of Surgery, University Hospital, Zurich, Switzerland.
He has also been appointed as Director of the National Trauma Research Institute which was officially opened in July 2004 within the AMREP precinct of the Alfred Hospital.
His specific areas of interest are spinal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, multi-trauma and neurotrauma. He is a general and orthopaedic surgeon.
Professor Kossmann has co-authored over 70 Medline listed publications on a variety of trauma related topics. He is also Trauma Section Editor of the ANZ Journal of Surgery, Member of the Editorial Board of INJURY and Advisory Board Member of the European Journal of Trauma.

Dr Matthias Russ
Department of Trauma Surgery and National Trauma Research Institute, The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, Australia

Matthias is a Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon and General Surgeon working at the Trauma Unit and the National Trauma Research Institute (NTRI) at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne/Australia. He worked at the University Of Geneva/Switzerland, the University of Ulm and at the Hospital of Bietigheim, a teaching Hospital of the University of Heidelberg, both in Germany. In regards to orthopaedic trauma surgery, he has been since 1994 involved in the invention, research and development of the V.A.C.®-Therapy and the V.A.C.®-Instill as well as the Biosurgery and SkinStretching together with Wim Fleischmann.

Matthias is currently at the NTRI undertaking further research in the field of soft tissue damage and soft tissue infections in clinical and animal trials.

A three hour interactive workshop including a V.A.C. ® demonstration in the operating theatre of The Alfred Hospital will be held as part of the Congress Program. The workshops, which will run from 1.00pm - 4.00pm on Wednesday 24 August 2005, will be available for a maximum of 20 participants only. If you would like to attend the workshops, please indicate your desire to attend when completing the registration form. Please note the workshops are inclusive for fulltime delegates and a minimum attendance of 10 participants is required for the workshops to proceed. Please note the deadline for booking the workshop is Friday 19 August 2005.
