Australia commenced bidding to hold this major forestry event in 1997/98. IUFRO has comprehensive rules covering social, environmental, technical, financial and other matters that each bidding country must satisfy to be considered. Australia's bid, which was enthusiastically supported by Australian Federal and State Forestry Agencies in Australia that belong to IUFRO, was underpinned by State/Federal government support. The international Council, which is the governing body of IUFRO, unanimously supported Australia's bid in August 2000.

Corporate sponsorship is now being sought by the Congress Organising Committee to supplement the various government contributions. Substantial local and international support will assist scientists from developing countries attend this very important forestry event.
