The IUFRO Congress Scientific and Organizing Committees wish to emphasize the importance and effectiveness of posters as a means of communicating research results. A well-designed poster is an excellent communication tool, but is often seen as being inferior to a verbal presentation. This is not the case, and to emphasize this, IUFRO will be offering prizes for the best posters, but no prizes for verbal presentations. Posters that follow the guidelines presented below have the most likely chance of winning poster prizes.
A poster is a synopsis of a research paper that is presented visually on one large sheet of paper. A poster uses text and graphics (figures and photographs) to summarize a research activity and its results.
The main point about posters is that the information is provided through the use of visuals in a well-coordinated and organized combination of text and illustrations.
A poster should relate to one of the technical (numbers 001-140) or research showcase (numbers 151-155) sessions identified in the Congress. No posters will be attached to sub-plenary sessions.
There will be no oral presentation of a poster, except by special arrangement with the Session organizer. However, posters will be located, wherever possible, close to the room in which the session is being held, and selected posters may be brought into the session. Rather than having a room dedicated to posters, posters will be spread out in the foyers and will therefore be more accessible to their audience.
All poster presenters will be invited by the relevant session organizer to submit a full written paper for possible inclusion in the publication arising from the session. Acceptance will be subject to the review procedures used by the publication and relevance to the session. Posters will also be considered by the session rapporteur when preparing the report of the session.
All poster abstracts will be included in the abstracts volume, provided that they are received by the deadline published. In a significant innovation for IUFRO, the volume will be a special issue of the International Forestry Review, and abstracts will therefore be exposed to an international audience that extends well beyond the congress attendees. The final deadline for inclusion of a poster abstract in the abstracts volume is 15 March 2005.
Posters can be presented in any of the four IUFRO languages (English, French, German, Spanish). However, all abstracts will be published in English only, with the Secretariat of IUFRO providing translation services. We strongly encourage you to present your poster in English, as this is the most common language of IUFRO scientists.
Posters will be mounted on free-standing panels provided by the conference organizers. Each panel display area is 1m x 1m (39in x 39in). The following guidelines will help ensure consistency and good quality.
